Signs of a Leaking Water Heater
Detecting a leaky hot water tank can sometimes be difficult, especially if it doesn’t immediately result in a lot of water. While you might notice a shortage of hot water coming from your plumbing fixtures, it might be difficult to see the leak itself, depending on where the unit is kept. However, if you notice a change in your hot water availability or if you see even a small amount of moisture around the tank, you should have it inspected.
If a small leak isn’t treated, it can lead to a more serious water heater flood. This can occur when rust eats through the tank or some of its components, causing a rupture. It is usually experienced as a gush of hot water when the tank gives way and 20, 30, or more gallons of water come pouring out.
If this happens, call the certified experts at Rocket Restoration to clean the flooded area professionally.

Steps To Take When Your Water Heater Floods
Stop the Flow of Water:
- Turn off the Gas Supply Valve: Locate the gas shutoff valve on your water heater’s gas line and turn it a quarter turn clockwise using a wrench.
- Turn off the Cold Water Supply Valve: Find the shut-off valve on the cold water pipe entering the water heater and turn it clockwise to stop the water flow.
Ensure Safety:
- Electrical Hazard: If water has reached electrical components, turn off the main breaker to your house to prevent electrical shock.
- Gas Leak: If you smell gas, evacuate the house immediately and call the fire department from a safe location. Avoid turning on any lights or appliances as a spark could ignite the gas.
Address the Standing Water:
- Contain the Water: Use towels, rags, or sandbags to contain the spread of water.
- Remove the Water: Once the water source is off, use a wet/dry vac or mop to remove standing water.
Relieve Pressure (if applicable):
- Consult Your Water Heater Manual: Some water heaters have a pressure relief valve. If yours does, consult your manual before releasing pressure, as scalding hot water may be present.
Assess the Damage:
- Once the Water is Under Control, inspect the area for damage. Look for signs of leaks, cracks, or water damage on the water heater, surrounding walls, and floors.
Call a Plumber:
- Don’t Attempt Repairs Yourself: A licensed plumber can diagnose the cause of the leak, assess the damage to your water heater, and recommend repairs or replacement.
Contact Your Insurance Company:
- Depending on Your Homeowner’s Insurance Policy, flood damage from your water heater may be covered. Contact your insurance company to inquire about filing a claim.

How To Prevent Your Water Heater From Flooding Your Basement
- Consider replacing the unit if it is past its warranty period or over 10 years old.
- Look for leaks and off-color (or smelly) hot water. Also, listen for unusual sounds coming from the unit.
- Drain and flush the tank about once a year.
- Have a professional test the relief valve.
- Check where the drain pan drains. Ensure it is not just dumping water from any major leak onto the floor a few feet away.
